Why visit?

Paraná is a state in southern Brazil, bordered by Paraguay and Argentina to the west and southwest, the state of Santa Catarina to the south, São Paulo to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. It is one of the country's most culturally layered states: alongside the Portuguese, indigenous and African heritage common to most of Brazil, Paraná absorbed waves of European and Asian immigration — German, Polish, Ukrainian, Italian, Syrian-Lebanese and Japanese communities all left a visible mark on its towns, churches, food and festivals. Prudentópolis remains the heart of Brazil's Ukrainian community, while Maringá carries a strong Japanese and Syrian-Lebanese imprint.

Geographically the state runs from a mild, planned-city capital on the highland plateau down through araucaria (Paraná pine) forest — one of the world's most important subtropical forests — to the Atlantic Forest of the Serra do Mar and a short, dramatic coastline of bays, mangroves and islands. Inland, the soybean, maize, wheat and yerba mate belts give way at the far western border to two of South America's superlatives: the Iguaçu Falls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the colossal Itaipu hydroelectric dam.

For travelers, Paraná offers an unusually compact mix: the country's single most-visited natural wonder at Foz do Iguaçu, a capital (Curitiba) celebrated worldwide for urban planning and green space, one of the great scenic railway descents in the Americas down to the coast, and quiet island and colonial escapes within easy reach of one another.

When is the best time to visit?

Paraná is subtropical and noticeably cooler than most of Brazil, especially on the Curitiba plateau (around 900 m), where winters (June–August) can be genuinely cold and damp, with occasional frost. Summer (December–February) is warm and the wettest season inland, with afternoon storms.

The most comfortable months for combining the highlands, the coast and Iguaçu are the shoulder seasons — April–May and September–October — with milder temperatures and lower rainfall. The Iguaçu Falls are spectacular year-round but vary with flow: the rainy summer months bring the most thunderous volume, while the dry winter months mean clearer skies and easier photography.

For festivals, Ponta Grossa hosts the National Dark Draft Beer Party (Festa Nacional do Chopp Escuro), and Prudentópolis comes alive for Ukrainian Orthodox Easter celebrations (movable date, March–April). Avoid expecting beach weather outside the December–March window on the Paraná coast, which is cooler and rainier than Brazil's northeast.

How do you get around?

Paraná's two main air gateways are Afonso Pena International Airport (CWB) in Curitiba and Foz do Iguaçu International Airport (IGU) — the two cities are roughly 630 km apart, so flying between them (about 1.5 hours) is far more practical than the 8–9 hour bus haul.

Long-distance travel within the state is dominated by buses, which connect Curitiba with Londrina, Maringá, Ponta Grossa, Cascavel and Foz do Iguaçu from the capital's central bus-rail terminal (Rodoferroviária). Approximate distances from Curitiba: Ponta Grossa ~115 km, Paranaguá ~90 km, Maringá ~430 km, Londrina ~380 km, Foz do Iguaçu ~630 km.

The standout rail experience is the Serra Verde Express, a tourist train that descends the Serra do Mar from Curitiba to Morretes (and on to Paranaguá), one of the most scenic railway journeys in Brazil — see Notable Experiences. To reach Ilha do Mel, drive or bus to Pontal do Sul on the coast, then take the passenger ferry; the island itself is car-free, so getting around there is on foot. Within Curitiba, the integrated BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) system is the model the city is famous for. Car rental is useful for the coast and for reaching parks like Vila Velha near Ponta Grossa.

Where should you go?

  • Curitiba — the state capital and cultural hub, world-renowned for innovative urban planning, its Botanic Gardens and a strong museum and dining scene.
  • Foz do Iguaçu — the main gateway to the Iguaçu Falls and a tri-border cultural mix with Argentina and Paraguay; also the base for visiting the Itaipu Dam.
  • Morretes — a charming colonial town in the Serra do Mar, the classic terminus of the scenic mountain railway and home of the regional dish barreado.
  • Paranaguá — the historic port city on the coast, with colonial architecture and the boat connections to the bay and islands.
  • Ilha do Mel — a car-free Atlantic island prized for its beaches, diving, lighthouse and old fortress; the state's signature eco-escape.

What should you eat?

Paraná's table reflects both its immigrant heritage and its agricultural output. The state's most iconic dish is barreado, a slow-cooked beef stew traditionally sealed in a clay pot and simmered for many hours, served over cassava flour (farinha) with banana and rice — a coastal specialty most associated with Morretes, where riverside restaurants make it the centerpiece of the train-excursion day trip.

On the coast around Paranaguá and Ilha do Mel, seafood comes to the fore — fresh fish, shrimp and oysters from the bays and mangroves. Inland, the state is a major producer of yerba mate, and the hot infusion chimarrão (shared from a gourd) is a daily ritual, as is the local cold/sweet variant. Curitiba's diversity shows up in its restaurants, from Polish and Ukrainian pierogi-style dumplings to Japanese and Syrian-Lebanese kitchens, especially strong in Maringá. Pine nuts (pinhão) from the araucaria, roasted or boiled, are a beloved winter snack across the highlands.

What is the culture like?

Paraná's festival calendar mirrors its mosaic of communities. In Prudentópolis, the center of Brazil's Ukrainian community, Orthodox traditions are vividly on display — most strikingly around Easter (movable, March–April), with pysanky (decorated eggs), traditional foods and onion-domed churches. Ponta Grossa hosts the National Dark Draft Beer Party (Festa Nacional do Chopp Escuro), a nod to the region's German brewing heritage. Cascavel is known for events such as the Cascavel de Ouro motorsport race and the Coopavel rural/agribusiness show.

Curitiba anchors the state's arts scene, with a notable theatre festival and a cityscape full of distinctive modern architecture (the Oscar Niemeyer Museum among its landmarks). Across the state, immigrant heritage surfaces in Japanese cultural events in Maringá and Polish, Italian and German community festivals, while indigenous Caingangue and Carijó history forms the deeper cultural substrate.
