Why visit Alter do Chao?

Alter do Chão is a beach town and administrative district of the municipality of Santarém, in the state of Pará, sitting on the right bank of the Tapajós River about 37 km (roughly an hour by road via the PA-457) south of central Santarém. Though it has a permanent population of only about 6,700, it is the leading tourist draw of the region — celebrated for white-sand river beaches and clear, warm water that the English newspaper The Guardian once ranked among the most beautiful freshwater beaches in the world. That reputation earned it the nickname the "Brazilian Caribbean," and on a bright dry-season day, with sandbars rising out of the green Tapajós, the comparison feels earned.

The town's rhythm is set by the river and the seasons, and the single most important thing to understand is that the beaches themselves are seasonal. During the dry season (roughly August to December) the water drops and broad sandbanks emerge, including the famous Ilha do Amor sandbar directly across from town. In the rainy season many beaches shrink or disappear underwater altogether. For classic beach time, come in the dry months; this is also when the town's signature festival falls. Be aware that Alter do Chão fills up on weekends and holidays, when visitors pour in from Santarém and beyond.

The settlement is small, walkable, and centred on its main square and the church-fronted waterfront looking out to Ilha do Amor. Beyond the village itself, the surrounding Tapajós region — beaches, forest, igarapés (creeks), and the vast Flona do Tapajós national forest — is the real attraction. A practical caution for the wilder beaches: watch for stingrays, which sting only when stepped on. Shuffle your feet as you wade and you'll push them out of the way harmlessly.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Santarém–Maestro Wilson Fonseca International Airport (STM), about 30 km from Alter do Chão. There is no direct airport–Alter do Chão bus. The cheapest route is to take an airport–Santarém bus (around R$ 2) into the city, then transfer to a Santarém–Alter do Chão bus; ask the driver where to make the connection. Alternatively, negotiate a fare with the taxi drivers waiting at the airport.

By Car / Road

From central Santarém, drive south on road PA-457 for about 37 km (roughly one hour) to reach Alter do Chão.

Buses run frequently between Santarém and Alter do Chão, leaving approximately every 35 minutes from about 05:30 until 23:00, for around R$ 3.50. In Santarém, catch them along Avenida Rui Barbosa in the centre or at the Praça Tiradentes bus stand.

Alter do Chão is small enough to explore entirely on foot — the village, its square, and the waterfront are all within easy walking distance.

The one crossing you'll want to make is to Ilha do Amor, the sandbar/island just offshore. You can swim across, or hire a canoe for about R$ 3 for up to four people. In the dry season there are several points where you can simply wade across in water no more than about 60 cm deep.

What are the things to do?

  • Ilha do Amor — The iconic sandbar island facing the town, the heart of Alter do Chão's beach scene. Reach it by wading, swimming, or short canoe ride (R$ 3 for up to four people). Best in the dry season, when the sand is fully exposed.

  • Carimbó — The region's traditional Afro-Indigenous music and dance style. Look for a live presentation to see (and hear) it performed.

  • Festa Folclórica do Sairé (Festa do Sairé) — Alter do Chão's signature folkloric festival, held between June and September at the Sairódromo (Praça do Sairé). A vivid showcase of regional music, dance, and ritual, and the town's biggest annual event.

  • Morro da Piroca — A hill with a panoramic view over the region. To reach the trailhead, walk up the beach on the west side of Ilha do Amor and look for a red-and-white sign near the trees marking the trail entrance; follow the well-marked path to the top (at the single junction, continue straight — don't turn right). The hike is of medium difficulty and takes about 45 minutes; the trail is exposed in several places, so bring water and sunscreen.

  • Beach days on the Tapajós — The core experience: swimming and lounging on the white-sand beaches and sandbars, above all Ilha do Amor. Remember to shuffle your feet to avoid stingrays on the more remote stretches.

  • Flona do Tapajós (Tapajós National Forest) — A major draw for getting into the Amazon. Activities include bathing in beaches and streams; trekking among giant Amazonian trees such as the kapok (Ceiba pentandra); wildlife observation; boat and canoe trips through igapó (flooded forest) and igarapés; sport fishing; visits to the LBA Project tower and to indigenous communities; and visits to sustainable-forest and ecological-leather projects. Overnight stays in communities are permitted. Entry around R$ 6.50.

  • Hike Morro da Piroca — A roughly 45-minute climb to a panoramic viewpoint over the river and forest (see the See section above).

  • Canoe and boat trips — Paddle or cruise the Tapajós, its creeks, and flooded forest, either independently around Ilha do Amor or as part of guided tours into the Flona.
