Barreirinhas

Maranhão, Brazil

Why visit Barreirinhas?

Barreirinhas is a small riverside city in northern Maranhão, set on the banks of the Rio Preguiças. Though modest in size, it is the undisputed main gateway to Lençóis Maranhenses National Park — the surreal expanse of white sand dunes pocked with rain-fed freshwater lagoons that draws nearly all of the town's visitors. Beyond its role as a base camp, Barreirinhas has a charm of its own: a sandy, laid-back townscape, a lively riverfront boardwalk, and the slow rhythm of a place where boats and 4x4s matter more than cars.

The town sits on the Rota das Emoções, the popular tourist trail linking the Lençóis Maranhenses with Jericoacoara and the Parnaíba Delta, so it functions as both a destination and a transit hub. Most travellers organise their dune-and-lagoon excursions here, then continue east toward Paulino Neves, Tutóia and Ceará, or backtrack to the state capital, São Luís.

Climate is hot and tropical year-round. The crucial thing to plan around is the rains: the lagoons of Lençóis Maranhenses only fill after the wet season (roughly January–June), and the best months to see them brimming and blue are generally June through September. Visiting in the dry late-year months (October–December) often means shallow or empty lagoons, so time your trip accordingly. Whenever you come, bring sun protection — there is little shade on the dunes.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The main airport is in São Luís (SLZ), the state capital, about 3.5–4.5 hours away by road. Shared vans (locally called transporte alternativo) collect arriving passengers at the airport for the run to Barreirinhas — look for staff in yellow polo shirts marked "Barreirinhas"; around R$70 (the trip takes ~3.5 hr), with some departures in the small hours to meet overnight flights from São Paulo that land between 02:00 and 04:00.

Seasonally, Azul operates flights into Barreirinhas' small airstrip from Fortaleza, Jericoacoara and Parnaíba on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays (as of late 2024) — convenient if you are coming along the Rota das Emoções rather than from São Luís. Air taxis to the local landing strip can also be arranged through agencies.

By Car / Road

From São Luís, four daily buses run from the Rodoviária (departures around 06:00, 08:45, 14:00, 19:30), taking about 4½ hours for roughly R$60 with the Cisne Branco company; vans cover the same route. Shared taxis to/from São Luís leave when full (4 seats), about 3–4 hours, around R$140 for the car — be aware a taxi can take longer than the bus depending on where fellow passengers are dropped.

From Jericoacoara, the improved road via Paulino Neves now lets 4x4 transport reach Barreirinhas in about 7 hours; expect under R$1,000 for a vehicle for up to 4 passengers and around R$1,200 for up to 6 (operators such as Global Connection on Rua do Forró in Jericoacoara can combine travellers to share costs). Several daily pick-up trucks also run east to Paulino Neves (about R$13, 2½ hr), with onward connections to Tutóia and Parnaíba.

By Boat

A daily boat heads down the Rio Preguiças to Atins via Mandacaru (and Caburé on request) around 09:00, about 4 hours for around R$5; it returns after dark depending on the tide. Agencies can also arrange combined water-and-overland transfers toward Parnaíba or Jericoacoara.

Barreirinhas is small and mostly walkable — the centre, riverfront and agencies are all within easy reach on foot. For anything further, mototaxis are the standard ride and will take you almost anywhere in town for around R$3. There is no metro or formal local bus network; ride-hailing apps are unreliable to non-existent here, so plan on walking, mototaxis, and tour-operator transfers. Most onward excursions (to the dunes, lagoons and river) are 4x4 or boat trips booked through agencies rather than self-driven.

What are the things to do?

  • Preguiças Lighthouse (Farol de Preguiças) — a tall lighthouse near the village of Mandacaru, downriver from town; climbing it rewards you with sweeping views over the river, dunes and surrounding flatlands. It's a standard stop on the Rio Preguiças boat trip.
  • Mandacaru — the riverside village at the lighthouse, worth a wander on the boat tour.
  • Lençóis Maranhenses dunes & lagoons — the white-sand dunescape and its seasonal freshwater lagoons (Lagoa Azul, Lagoa Bonita and others) are the headline sight; reached on 4x4 excursions from town (see the Do section for tour details and timing).

Barreirinhas is the launch point for nearly every Lençóis Maranhenses experience. Note that since Santo Amaro operators restricted outside agencies from running tours on their side, trips routed there from Barreirinhas have become pricier (you pay both a Barreirinhas agent and a Santo Amaro fee). Booking several tours with the same agent helps with bargaining; prices are typically lower if booked directly with an agency rather than through your pousada.

  • Lagoa Azul (Blue Lagoon) — the least strenuous of the standard lagoon tours. Departs town around 14:00, crosses the river by ferry (~15:00), then a half-hour bumpy ride to a medium, gentle dune. In wet season the guide may circuit four or five lagoons, with everyone gathering at the high point for sunset. Prettier individual lagoons, less dramatic panoramas. ~R$80 via accommodation; ~R$120 booked directly (Nov 2023).
  • Lagoa Bonita (Beautiful Lagoon) — the most popular tour. Same ~14:00 departure and ferry, then about an hour's ride to a high, steep dune (a rope helps you climb). Spectacular panoramic views of dunes stretching to the horizon; busier. ~R$80 via accommodation, around R$60 booked directly.
  • Boat trip along Rio Preguiças — a scenic downstream cruise with usual stops at Vassouras, Mandacaru (lighthouse) and Caburé. You can ask to be dropped at Atins before the boat returns. ~R$90 via accommodation; ~R$60 all the way to Atins (luggage included) if booked directly.
  • Cardosa floating tour — usually a morning trip to Cardosa village, where you float downstream on buoys (visibility is low, so not really snorkelling). ~R$80 via accommodation; ~R$50 direct.
  • Daytrip to Atins — a road tour taking in the main attractions around Atins. ~R$130 via accommodation; ~R$110 direct.
  • Daytrip to Parnaíba Delta — for those not walking the full Rota das Emoções: ~07:30 departure, a 2-hr ride to Tutóia, then a boat tour through mangroves, seahorse spots and idyllic river islands, ending with the ibis fly-in at sunset. Transport runs R$400/500/600 for 2/4/6 people, plus ~R$75 each for the boat.

For nightlife, there's usually something happening most evenings but venues shift — ask around locally. The relaxed default is to linger at the riverfront stalls.

Where to eat?

Food here leans toward fresh seafood and simple regional fare, with most options clustered near the riverfront and main square. Portions are often sized "for two," so it's easy to share.

  • Terraços do Preguiça (Beira Rio) — varied, mostly-seafood menu in a riverfront setting; dishes for two around R$40. Mid-range.
  • Ressaca (on the main square) — a good selection of burgers and finger food; a casual, budget-friendly option. Budget.
  • Riverfront boardwalk stalls — the spot for cheap snacks and a drink with a river view. Budget.

Where to drink?

The signature ritual is to chill at one of the stalls along the riverfront boardwalk with a cold drink as the day winds down. Nightlife is informal and roving — there's usually something on somewhere, but locations change from night to night, so ask around. Brazilian beer and caipirinhas are the standards; locally, look out for cashew-based drinks and juices given the region's cashew production.

Water safety: stick to bottled or properly filtered water, as you would elsewhere in rural northeastern Brazil, and carry plenty for excursions onto the dunes where none is available.

Where to stay?

Beds in the centre are relatively pricey for what you get, with a few standout exceptions. Many pousadas line the riverfront and the main avenue near the bus and mototaxi stands.

Budget

  • Pousada Gomes (around the corner from the mototaxis) — very basic, shared bathrooms; singles from around R$10.
  • Pousada do Porto (riverfront, ~300 m upriver from the boardwalk; ☏ +55 98 3349-1910) — doubles with fan around R$40, air-con also available.

Mid-range

  • Pousada Lins (Avenida Joaquim Soeiro de Carvalho, by the mototaxi stand) — bright, clean and spacious, with a courtyard, small pool and hammocks; singles around R$60.
  • Pousada Lagoa Bonito (atop a sand dune with marina views) — double with fan and a good breakfast around R$40.

What should you buy?

The region is a major producer of cashew nuts (castanha de caju) — oddly, the best place to buy them is not the central produce market but the shops near the church (around R$50/kg) or the stalls inside the National Park (around R$40/kg). Beyond that, expect modest local crafts and provisions rather than dedicated shopping districts. Stock up on water, sunscreen and any specialty supplies before heading to the dunes, where prices rise and selection thins. Gentle bargaining is normal, especially when bundling tour bookings.

Where to go next?

  • São Luís (~4–5 hr by bus/van, R$51, Cisne Branco; four daily) — the state capital, with its UNESCO-listed colonial old town.
  • Paulino Neves (~2½ hr, pick-up trucks) — "the little Lençóis," with its own dune-and-lagoon scenery, also reachable on foot across the sands.
  • Atins (~4 hr by boat down the Rio Preguiças, or by 4x4) — laid-back dune-edge village popular with kitesurfers and a quieter base for the park.
  • Tutóia (~2 hr, R$15, Cisne Branco; two daily) — gateway to the Parnaíba Delta.
  • Parnaíba Delta — mangrove-laced river delta of islands and birdlife, a highlight of the Rota das Emoções.
  • Jericoacoara (~7 hr by 4x4 via Paulino Neves) — the famous dune-backed beach village in Ceará, continuing the Rota das Emoções eastward.
