Chapada dos Veadeiros
Goiás, Brazil
Why visit Chapada dos Veadeiros?
Chapada dos Veadeiros is one of central Brazil's great wild landscapes — a high plateau in the northeast of Goiás state, roughly 230 km from Brasília, whose name has become synonymous with both a vast natural region and the national park at its heart. The Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Veadeiros, created in 1961 and inscribed by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage Site, protects an outstanding remnant of the Cerrado, one of the world's oldest and most biodiverse tropical savanna ecosystems. Travellers come for the waterfalls, canyons, crystal-clear river pools and otherworldly rock formations, set among low, gnarled trees and ground-hugging vegetation that recalls the African savanna. The region also draws a mystic crowd, attracted by the quartz-crystal bedrock (and a much-repeated rumour that the Chapada is the brightest point on Earth as seen from space), alongside the usual stories of UFO sightings.
There are essentially two bases. São Jorge is a small village right at the park entrance — deliberately left without asphalt roads or street lighting to keep the surrounding fauna and flora undisturbed. It is rustic and atmospheric, the place to feel genuinely off-grid. Alto Paraíso de Goiás, about 20 km away, is a proper small town with paved roads, lighting and a far wider choice of places to eat and sleep, making it the main gateway. Beyond the park itself, many of the best-known sights — the Moon Valley, Almécegas falls — sit on private land reached by paying a small daily fee.
The climate is tropical, hot and semi-arid, averaging around 25°C. The national park closes during the rainy season (December–February), when daily downpours make waterfalls genuinely dangerous; avoid this window. From May onward the rain ceases and the landscape turns nearly desert-dry through the long dry season, when September temperatures can hit 40°C. The best time to visit is June–July, when rain is unlikely but the waterfalls still run full; later in the dry season the falls thin out but never disappear.

By Plane
There are no regular commercial flights into the Chapada region. The standard approach is to fly into Brasília International Airport (BSB), which has frequent connections from across Brazil, then continue overland (about 230 km) to Alto Paraíso de Goiás or São Jorge. The state capital Goiânia is also a feasible, if slightly less convenient, air gateway.
By Car / Road
Driving from Brasília (around 230 km) the roads are in reasonable condition: take the BR-020 and GO-118, passing through Formosa, São Gabriel and São João D'Aliança to reach Alto Paraíso. To continue to the park, follow GO-327 to São Jorge village, where the park entrance is located. Formosa lies on the route from Brasília. Buses run from Brasília to Alto Paraíso; from Alto Paraíso onward to São Jorge connections are limited, so many travellers arrange a transfer or rent a car.
A car is effectively essential. The attractions are spread out and too far apart to walk between, so plan on driving or — far less advisable — hitchhiking, which locals do but which carries the usual risks. From São Jorge everything is close: the park and the main waterfalls are 10–20 minutes away. From Alto Paraíso distances are a little longer but the routes are well signposted.
Few people speak English, so write down the names of the waterfalls you want to see and carry the list with you — locals are exceptionally friendly and happy to point you in the right direction. Note that most park and private-property visits require a local guide rather than self-navigation (see below).
What are the things to do?
Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Veadeiros (phone +55 62 3455-1116). The entrance is near São Jorge village. Two authorised trails run inside the park: the Way of the Canyons (Trilha dos Cânions) and the Way of the Falls (Trilha das Cariocas/Cachoeiras), each typically taking from morning until late afternoon. Standard admission runs 8 AM–noon, with the park closing at 5 PM; during Daylight Saving Time (mid-October to mid-February) admission shifts to 9 AM–1 PM, closing 6 PM. Every visitor must be accompanied by a local authorised guide, found right at the entrance or in São Jorge. Each guide may take a group of up to 10 people and charges around R$100 for the whole group. A per-person admission fee of roughly R$10 applies.
Beyond the park, several remarkable sights sit on private property, each charging about R$10 per person:
- Moon Valley (Vale da Lua) — a 20-minute walk from São Jorge, a moonlike landscape of glimmering water-sculpted rock with two large natural pools good for swimming.
- Almécegas waterfalls — near São Jorge.
- Raizama waterfalls
- São Bento waterfalls
- Andorinha waterfalls
- Segredo waterfalls
- Confluence of the São Miguel and Tocantinzinho rivers — the draw here is jumping into the river and being carried down toward the confluence.
Chapada dos Veadeiros is, above all, an active outdoor destination:
- Trekking — the park's canyon and waterfall trails are the headline experience; both are full-day, guide-led walks.
- Canyoning — descending the region's narrow water-carved gorges.
- Rappel — abseiling on the cliffs and waterfalls.
- Swimming — natural pools at Moon Valley, the river confluences and many of the falls.
A guided full-day visit into the national park is the essential experience; combine it with one or two of the private-property waterfalls on separate days.

Cold beer is the regional default after a hot day on the trails, and a couple of São Jorge spots double as the village's social hubs:
- Bar do Pelé — São Jorge centre. Cold beer and billiard tables.
- Casa de Cultura Cavaleiro de Jorge — Cavaleiro de Jorge street, São Jorge. Occasional shows and performances.

What should you buy?
São Jorge in particular is full of crystals, quartz and polished rocks for sale — fitting for a region famous for its crystalline soil. Handmade decorative objects, necklaces made from seeds, and leather goods are sold all along the village streets. Browsing the informal street stalls is part of the experience; there are no large shops, so bring cash.
Where to go next?
- Alto Paraíso de Goiás (36 km) — the region's main town and a convenient base with fuller infrastructure.
- Colinas do Sul (34 km) — a quiet Cerrado town nearby.
- Teresina de Goiás (100 km) — small Goiás town en route north through the Chapada.
- Niquelândia (114 km) — gateway to more of northern Goiás and its reservoirs.
- Cavalcante (123 km) — base for visiting Kalunga quilombola communities and yet more spectacular waterfalls.
- Brasília (230 km) — Brazil's modernist capital and the main air gateway, worth a stop for its Niemeyer architecture.
Stay safe: Travellers are advised to get a yellow fever vaccination at least ten days before the trip. Never approach waterfalls in bad weather, as flash flooding during the rainy season is genuinely dangerous.
