Vitoria

Espírito Santo, Brazil

Why visit Vitoria?

Vitória, also known as "Little Rio de Janeiro," is the capital of Espírito Santo, a city on the southeast coast of Brazil. With approximately 320,000 residents (2022) and nearly 1.9 million in its greater metropolitan area, it is considered by the UN to be the fourth best place to live in Brazil. The city is built on an archipelago of 34 islands within the Bay of Vitória, surrounded by mangroves, beaches, and granite formations. Its neighborhoods are framed by parks and forests, and a lively cultural calendar runs year-round. Many visitors use Vitória as a base for day trips to nearby destinations like Vila Velha, Guarapari, and Domingos Martins, all within two hours by car or bus.

Founded in 1551, Vitória is the third oldest capital in Brazil after Salvador and Recife. Its name commemorates a Portuguese victory over indigenous peoples on the island where the settlement was established, originally called "Vila Nova" and renamed "Vila Nova da Vitória." For centuries it served mainly as a port city, enduring French, British, and Dutch attacks in pursuit of sugar and pau-brasil (brazilwood). The city's other nicknames include Ilha do Mel (Honey Island) and Cidade Sol (Sun City).

The climate is tropical humid, with average maximum temperatures around 30 °C and minimums near 24 °C. Most rainfall falls between October and January. The best time to visit is during the drier months from May to September, when skies are clearer and temperatures are pleasant. The highest point in the municipality is the Maciço da Fonte Grande at 309 meters. The total municipal area is 104 km², including the main island, continental territory, coastal islands, and the oceanic islands of Trindade and Martin Vaz.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Eurico de Aguiar Salles Airport (VIX), located near the north end of Camburi beach, receives daily flights from most Brazilian state capitals, primarily via connections through Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, and Salvador. Major airlines include LATAM and Gol, with Azul also serving the airport. The airport is about 10 minutes by taxi from most hotels. Bus line 212 (Aeroporto / B.Mar × Mario Cyprestes) connects the airport through Camburi beach, the port, and the city center to the main bus station in 50–60 minutes.

By Train

Estação Pedro Nolasco (Av. Mário Gurgel, 259 – Vasco da Gama, Cariacica – ES), ☎ 0800 285-7000. A daily train departs Cariacica (in the Vitória metropolitan region) at 7 AM bound for Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, arriving around 8:30 PM. The reverse journey runs on the same schedule. The full trip costs around R$90.

By Car / Road

Two major highways serve Vitória: BR-101, running south–north along the coast connecting to Rio de Janeiro (south) and Salvador (north), and BR-262, running east–west to Belo Horizonte. Local highway ES-60 runs southward along the coast to Guarapari. The drive from Rio de Janeiro takes roughly 5–6 hours; from Belo Horizonte, about 6–7 hours. Long-distance buses run from Rio de Janeiro (~8 hours), São Paulo (~14 hours, mostly overnight), Salvador, Belo Horizonte, and Brasília to the downtown bus station.

Vitória has an extensive bus network, but cash is not accepted on board. You need a local "Cartão GV – Bilhete Único Metropolitano." If you have a CPF (Brazilian tax ID), you may be able to obtain one at a pharmacy; otherwise, you can get one at the Terminal Jardim América, opposite the train station. Ride-hailing apps such as 99 and Uber operate in the city. The central areas are reasonably walkable, especially around the old town and beachfront neighborhoods.
