Why visit Tefe?

Tefé is a small riverside town in Amazonas state, situated approximately 525 km west of Manaus on the south bank of the Solimões River (the upper Amazon), at the mouth of the Tefé River. With a population of around 87,000 (2020), Tefé is the last major outpost of civilization for those heading deeper into the western Amazon. The town serves as the primary gateway to the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve, one of the most important protected areas in the Amazon basin and a model for community-based conservation.

Life in Tefé revolves entirely around water. There are no roads connecting Tefé to the outside world—all access is by river or air. Even within the town, residents rely heavily on boats to get around. The town has a laid-back, frontier atmosphere, with a compact center of concrete buildings along the riverbank and surrounding neighborhoods connected by paths and waterways.

The climate is equatorial—hot and humid year-round with average temperatures around 27–30°C and rainfall distributed throughout the year, with slightly heavier precipitation from December to May. The river levels fluctuate dramatically between the high-water season (flooded forests, June–July) and low-water season (exposed beaches, October–November), each offering distinct experiences for visitors.
