Central District is Botswana's largest and most populous district, spanning the heart of the country from the border with Zimbabwe in the east to the vast Kalahari sands in the west. It is a land of striking contrasts — from the bustling towns of Serowe and Palapye along the eastern hardveld to the remote wilderness of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, one of the largest protected areas on Earth. The region's character is defined by its rich Tswana heritage (the Bangwato tribe's historic capital at Serowe), its diamond-driven economy (Orapa and Letlhakane), and its extraordinary natural attractions: the eerie salt pans of Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pan, where zebra migrations and flamingo flocks create unforgettable spectacles.
When to Visit
The dry winter months (May to October) are best for wildlife viewing in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Makgadikgadi Pans, and Nxai Pan, when animals gather at water sources. The green summer season (November to March) brings lush vegetation, newborn animals, and migratory birds to the pans, but many remote tracks become impassable after rain. The Makgadikgadi zebra migration peaks November–December. Serowe's Khama III Memorial Museum and the annual Maitisong Festival events are year-round attractions. Avoid the hot, humid months of December–February for extended outdoor activities.

WhatsAppGetting Around
The A1 highway runs through the district from Ramokgwebana (Zimbabwe border) in the northeast through Francistown, Palapye, Mahalapye, and south to Gaborone — paved and in good condition. The A14 connects Serowe to the A1 at Palapye. The A3 branches west from Serowe toward Ghanzi via Letlhakane and Orapa. Intercity minibuses and coaches link all major towns along the A1 corridor. For the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and Makgadikgadi Pans, a 4×4 vehicle is essential; most visitors self-drive or join organised tours from Maun. The nearest domestic airports are at Letlhakane (internal flights) and Maun (for fly-in safaris to the game reserves).

WhatsAppCuisine
Central District's cuisine is rooted in Tswana traditions: seswaa (pounded beef or goat meat), bogobe (sorghum or maize porridge), and morogo (wild spinach). The towns along the A1 corridor have simple roadside eateries (choma grills and vetkoek fried dough). Serowe has a few restaurants serving Setswana staples and Western fare. For a local experience, try the street food stalls at the bus ranks — grilled meat skewers, fat cakes, and roasted maize are common. In the remote game reserves, safari camps serve full-board international cuisine. Vegetarian options are limited in rural areas.
Culture & Festivals
Serowe is the cultural heart of the Central District, home to the Khama III Memorial Museum, which chronicles the history of the Bangwato tribe and Botswana's founding fathers. The annual Dithubaruba cultural festival (dates vary) celebrates Tswana music, dance, and storytelling in Serowe. The Makgadikgadi Pans area has strong San (Bushmen) heritage; cultural tours from Gweta and Nata introduce traditional tracking, foraging, and storytelling. The diamond-mining towns of Orapa and Letlhakane have a more modern, corporate culture with expatriate communities.
