Plateau is a department in southeastern Benin, located on the border with Nigeria. The capital Pobè is the main urban centre. Plateau is known for its rolling hills, palm groves, and significant Yoruba population, who maintain strong cross-border ties with their kin in southwestern Nigeria. The department is primarily agricultural, with palm oil, maize, cassava, and cotton as key products. The region is off the main tourist trail but offers authentic Yoruba culture and the Ile-Ife connections of its traditional kingdoms.
When to Visit
November to February is the best time — dry and pleasant. The rainy seasons (April–July, September–October) bring higher rainfall. The landscape is greenest from July to November.
