Donga is a department in west-central Benin, situated between the Atacora hills to the west and the Borgou savannah to the east. The departmental capital Djougou is the largest city in the area and an important commercial centre on the route from Cotonou to the northwestern departments. Donga is characterised by rolling hills, fertile valleys, and significant Fulani (Peul) and Yoruba populations alongside the indigenous Otammari and Lokpa peoples. The department is less visited by tourists but offers authentic cultural encounters and a pleasant, green landscape.
When to Visit
November to February is the best time, with mild temperatures and dry roads. March–April is very hot. The rainy season (May–October) brings heavy rain that makes unpaved roads difficult.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Djougou is connected to Natitingou (northwest) and Parakou (east) by paved road. Bush taxis run regularly. Bassila is on the main Cotonou–Djougou road. Copargo and Ouaké are smaller towns connected by unpaved roads, with limited public transport.
