Collines

Collines (Hills) is a department in central Benin, named for its rolling terrain that forms the transition zone between the coastal lowlands and the northern savannah. The department is known for its scenic landscapes of wooded hills, rocky outcrops, and fertile valleys. The main towns — Dassa-Zoumé, Savalou, and Savè — are important market and transport centres. Collines is culturally significant as a meeting point of Yoruba, Mahi, and Fon populations. The region is less visited by international tourists but offers an authentic Central Benin experience, with traditional villages, weekly markets, and a landscape that invites exploration.

November to February is the best time — dry and relatively cool. The rainy seasons (April–July, September–October) bring heavy rain. The landscape is greenest from September to November.

The RNIE3 highway runs through Collines, connecting Dassa-Zoumé and Savè with Cotonou and Parakou. Bush taxis and minibuses are the main transport. Savalou and Glazoué are connected by paved and unpaved roads. Bantè and Ouèssè in the west are more remote and require longer travel on unpaved roads.

The cuisine of Collines blends Fon, Yoruba, and Mahi traditions: pâte (maize or yam dough) with sauces, grilled meat and fish, and yam dishes (fufu, fried yam). Ignames pilées (pounded yam) is a local speciality.

Collines is at the crossroads of Yoruba, Mahi, and Fon cultures. The annual Egungun festival (masked ceremonies honouring ancestors) is celebrated in Yoruba communities. Vodun and Christian traditions coexist, with the Basilica of Dassa-Zoumé being a major pilgrimage site.
