Overview

Borgou is the largest department in Benin by land area, stretching across the northern savannah and serving as the primary gateway between the country's coastal south and the Sahelian north. The departmental capital Parakou is Benin's third-largest city and the most important transport and commercial hub in the north. Borgou is the heartland of the Bariba people and their culture, known for the Gaani festival, traditional horse culture, and the Tata Somba architectural tradition. The landscape is rolling savannah with shea and baobab trees, punctuated by the Atacora hills in the west. For travellers heading to Pendjari and W National Parks or onward to Niger and Burkina Faso, Borgou is an essential transit region.

When to Visit

November to February is the best time, with lower temperatures and dry conditions. March–April can be very hot. The rainy season (May–October) makes unpaved roads difficult. The Gaani festival (November–December) is the cultural highlight.

Getting Around

Parakou is at the northern end of the paved RNIE3 highway from Cotonou (450 km, 6–7 hours). Bush taxis and minibuses run constantly. Raill is sparse — the short-lived passenger train service from Cotonou is currently suspended. Local travel to Bembereke, Nikki, and N'Dali is by bush taxi on paved or unpaved roads. Tchaourou is on the main highway south of Parakou.

The Gaani festival (November–December) is a spectacular event with horse parades, traditional dress, music, and dance, held in Nikki and Parakou.
