Santa Cruz
Toledo, Belize
Why visit Santa Cruz?
Santa Cruz is a small Q'eqchi' Maya village in the Toledo District of southern Belize, situated in the lowland foothills near the Southern Highway. The village is a quiet agricultural community where residents practice traditional milpa farming (corn, beans, and squash) alongside cacao cultivation. With a population of a few hundred, Santa Cruz has a typical Toledo village character: a cluster of wooden houses around a small church and school, surrounded by farmland and patches of tropical forest. The Q'eqchi' Maya language is widely spoken, and traditional cultural practices remain strong.
The village is not a major tourist destination but serves as an example of the many small Maya communities that dot Toledo's landscape. The Toledo Ecotourism Association has promoted cultural tourism initiatives in several such villages, offering visitors the chance to experience homestays and learn about traditional Maya life. The climate is tropical with a pronounced wet season (June–January) and a drier period (February–May).
