Overview

Orange Walk District occupies the heart of northern Belize, a flat expanse of sugar-cane fields, broad rivers, and Mennonite farmland stretching inland from the Mexican border region. Its capital, Orange Walk Town, sits 57 miles (95 km) north of Belize City along the Northern Highway, an easy run of a little over an hour from the international airport. This is working agricultural country rather than a beach-resort circuit — cane trucks rumble through town in season and the market gets going before dawn — but that everyday rhythm is exactly what gives the district its character.

What draws travellers here is its role as the gateway to Lamanai, one of the most atmospheric Maya sites in the country, reached by a memorable boat journey up the New River. Orange Walk Town makes a friendly, low-key base: a grid of small shops and restaurants around the market and Main Street, a clock-tower square, and hotels that can arrange river tours straight from their own docks.

Beyond the town, the district rewards slow exploration — lagoons such as Progresso and Honey Camp, the bay-side town of Corozal just to the north, and a scatter of Mennonite communities recognisable by their immaculately tended farms. It is a region best understood not as a single attraction but as a base camp for Northern Belize.

When to Visit

The practical calendar here turns on two things: rain and sugar cane. The dry months are the most comfortable for travel — secondary and rural roads in Northern Belize can get tricky in the wet season, and the New River boat trip to Lamanai is most pleasant under clear skies. If you're driving, take extra care after rain.

During the sugar-cane harvest, the Northern Highway and the roads around town fill with large cane trucks; build in extra time and drive defensively, especially on the approach to and from Belize City. There is a toll booth on the Belize City side of town to factor into your timing.

Getting Around

The Northern Highway (also called the Belize–Corozal road) is the district's spine and runs right through the centre of Orange Walk Town. It is paved and generally in good condition. Coming from Belize City you'll pass the toll booth on the approach; Corozal and, beyond it, Chetumal in Mexico lie a short drive to the north.

  • To/from Belize City: roughly 57 miles (95 km), a little over an hour by car. 2nd-class buses (no air conditioning, usually no luggage hold) run regularly to Belize City, generally no more than two hours one way. Belize City is the main connection point for buses to the rest of the country — hard to avoid if you're making onward links.
  • Within Orange Walk Town: walking is the best way to get around the compact downtown. The market area between the Corozal road and Main Street is busiest early in the morning. Walking by day is fairly safe, especially in groups, and locals are friendly — but avoid walking at night, even in pairs.
  • To Lamanai: travel up the New River by boat (arranged through most hotels) — easier on the body than the rough road and far better for wildlife. A bus/road tour is also possible.
  • Around the district: drive the surrounding countryside to reach smaller towns such as August Pine Ridge, San Pablo, and San Narciso, and the Mennonite farming communities.

For currency, the Belize Bank and Scotia Bank on Main Street change euros and US dollars (but not Mexican pesos). To change pesos, head to the store called Baba's on the main square near the clock tower — there's an unmarked teller window inside.

Cuisine

Orange Walk's food leans Mestizo and Mexican-influenced, and the best of it is found early and on the street. Look for the carts selling breakfast tacos around the market in the morning, and don't leave Belize without trying salbutes — fried corn cakes topped with tomato and chicken — available at a few spots along Main Street. The Belizean staple of barbecued chicken with rice and beans, flour tortillas, and potato salad is everywhere, and the town's Chinese restaurants (especially the larger ones) are reliably good.

A few places worth seeking out:

  • La Popular Bakery (1 Bethias Lane) — a local institution since 1955, famous for its abundant Mexican-style sweet breads and pastries baked daily; treats run about BZ$0.35–3.00.
  • Lamanai Riverside Retreat (Lamanai Alley) — one of the better tables in town, with a seafood-focused menu by the river; no vegetarian dishes are listed, but staff will happily put together a vegetarian plate.
  • Nahil Mayab Restaurant and Patio (Guadalupe St) — for Mayan favourites (Tu–Sa).
  • Maracas Bar & Grill (2 Naranjal St) — entrées and drinks by the river; you can even pull up in your boat.
  • Cocina Sabor (Belize Corozal Rd) — straightforward chicken, rice, salad, soup, and more.

Dietary note: vegetarians may find limited printed options, but cooks here are generally accommodating if you ask.

Culture & Festivals

Orange Walk's culture reflects its northern, border-region setting — a strong Mestizo and Mexican thread runs through its food, its bakeries, and the Spanish names of its outlying villages. The Banquitas House of Culture in Orange Walk Town anchors the scene as the cultural centre for the northern region, combining a museum and an art school, and is the best single stop for context on the district's heritage. Out in the countryside, the Mennonite communities form a distinct cultural layer, their presence marked by neat, productive farms.

Notable Experiences

  • The New River boat trip to Lamanai — the district's signature journey. Beyond the ruins themselves, the river run is a wildlife outing in its own right, with chances to spot crocodiles, fruit bats, spider monkeys, herons, and hundreds of bird species. Better hotels arrange day trips that typically include lunch, site admission, and a guided tour with a government-certified guide.
  • Dawn at the Orange Walk market — wander the market area between the Corozal road and Main Street as it comes alive early, and graze on tacos and salbutes from the street vendors.
  • Lagoon-hopping in Northern Belize — use the town as a base for trips to Progresso Lagoon and Honey Camp Lagoon, and the short drive north to Corozal's bay.
  • A countryside loop through the villages — drive out to August Pine Ridge, San Pablo, and San Narciso, taking in the Mennonite farms along the way.
  • Riverside dining and a night out — eat by the New River at the Lamanai Riverside Retreat or Maracas Bar & Grill, then catch live nightlife at Hi5 Pub & Nightclub (Th–Su) back in town.
