Five Blues Lake National Park
Cayo, Belize
Why visit Five Blues Lake National Park?
Five Blues Lake National Park is a small but beautiful protected area of about 4,300 acres (1,740 hectares) in the Cayo District, located about 30 km (19 miles) southeast of Belmopan near the village of St. Margaret's. The park's name comes from its centrepiece — a stunning sapphire-blue lake surrounded by dense tropical forest and limestone cliffs. The lake appears to change colour depending on the angle of the sunlight, creating a mesmerising display of blues and greens. The park protects a karst landscape of limestone hills, caves, underground rivers, and pristine forest.
The lake is a cenote — a sinkhole formed by the collapse of an underground limestone cave — similar to the Blue Hole but larger and more dramatic. It is considered one of the most beautiful natural swimming spots in Belize, with crystal-clear water of extraordinary depth and colour. The park is relatively undeveloped, with basic trails and minimal infrastructure, giving it a wild, untouched feel.
When to come: Year-round; the lake is swimmable in all seasons. The dry season (November–May) is best for hiking trails, which can be slippery in the wet season. Layout: A small parking area and trailhead lead to the lake via a short forest trail (about 20–30 minutes). The park also has a longer loop trail through the surrounding forest.
