Foursquare
Saint Philip, Barbados
Why visit Foursquare?
Foursquare is a small rural locality in Saint Philip, the largest and most easterly parish of Barbados, named for the historic Foursquare sugar estate that has worked these lands since the plantation era. Today the name is best known for the Foursquare Rum Distillery, one of the most respected distilleries in the Caribbean and the home of the Doorly's, R.L. Seale and Foursquare brands prized by rum connoisseurs worldwide. The setting is classic Saint Philip: gently rolling cane fields, gully woodland and scattered chattel-house villages, far from the beach resorts and a world away from the bustle of Bridgetown.
The estate sits in the agricultural heartland of the island, where sugar — and the rum distilled from it — has shaped the economy and culture for more than three centuries. There is no town here in the conventional sense; Foursquare is an estate and its surrounding farmland, with the nearest services at Six Cross Roads, the parish's commercial junction a few minutes away.
The climate is warm and tropical year-round, around 28-31°C. The dry, breezy season of December to May is the best time to visit; the wetter, more humid hurricane season runs June to November with short, heavy showers. The cooling Atlantic trade winds keep even the inland parishes pleasant.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
By Plane
The nearest and only airport is Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) in Christ Church, about 10-15 minutes' drive to the south-west. A fixed-fare taxi from the airport to the Foursquare area costs roughly BBD$40-55 — agree the fare before setting off, as taxis are unmetered. There is no dedicated airport shuttle into the interior.
By Car / Road
Foursquare lies in the centre-south of Saint Philip, about 25-30 minutes (around 18 km) from Bridgetown via the ABC Highway and Highway 6/5, and roughly 10-15 minutes from the airport. The roads are paved but narrow and winding through cane country, lightly signposted, so a GPS or map helps. Driving is on the left. Public buses — government (blue) buses, yellow minibuses and white ZR vans — serve the parish from Bridgetown and Six Cross Roads at a flat BBD$3.50 fare, though service to the smaller localities is sparse and most visitors arrive by car or taxi.
The area is rural and spread out, so a hired car or taxi is the practical way to get about. Car hire is available at the airport and on the south coast; you will need a Barbados visitor's driving permit (about BBD$10, issued with your licence). Taxis are unmetered — settle the price first. The flat-fare ZR vans and minibuses are cheap and lively but crowded and stop often. There are no reliable ride-hailing apps. The distillery itself is best reached and toured by car, and the surrounding lanes are walkable only for short strolls.
What are the things to do?
- Foursquare Rum Distillery — the main draw; a modern working distillery on a historic estate, producing the acclaimed Doorly's, R.L. Seale and Foursquare rums. Visitors can see the distillation and ageing operation and browse the on-site shop; check current visiting and tour arrangements in advance, as access can vary with production schedules. The estate also preserves old plantation buildings and machinery.
- Surrounding cane estate and gully country — the working fields and wooded gullies around Foursquare are characteristic of Saint Philip's quiet interior and pleasant to drive through.
The signature activity is touring the Foursquare Rum Distillery and tasting its award-winning single-blended rums — a must for rum enthusiasts and a counterpoint to the more touristy distillery experiences on the island. Beyond the distillery, Foursquare is an easy base for exploring Saint Philip: drive out to the cliffs and beach at The Crane, head to the wild Atlantic coast at Bathsheba and Crane, visit historic Sunbury Plantation House nearby, or catch the Friday fish fry at Oistins. Birdwatching and gentle walks in the gully woodland suit a slow rural day.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to eat?
Foursquare is not a dining destination in itself, so eat in nearby Six Cross Roads or on the south coast, where Bajan cooking shines: flying fish and cou-cou (the national dish), grilled mahi-mahi, peas and rice, macaroni pie, and Saturday pudding-and-souse. Rum shops and snackettes around Six Cross Roads serve cheap cutters (fish sandwiches), rotis and fried chicken for BBD$10-20. For a sit-down Bajan lunch, the Courtyard Restaurant at nearby Sunbury Plantation House (about 10 minutes away) serves mains around BBD$25-45. The famous Oistins Fish Fry (about 20 minutes) is the place for grilled fish and a party atmosphere on Friday nights. Vegetarian sides — rice and peas, ground provisions, macaroni pie — are easy to find.
Where to drink?
Rum is the whole point here: Barbados is its birthplace, and Foursquare's own bottlings are among the finest in the world. Across the parish, the village rum shop is the social hub, where a nip of local rum and a game of dominoes cost little. Local lager Banks Beer and rums such as Cockspur and Mount Gay are everywhere. Non-alcoholic choices include fresh coconut water, mauby, sorrel (at Christmas) and bottled juices. Barbados tap water, drawn from coral-rock aquifers, is safe to drink and excellent.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to stay?
- Budget: There is no lodging at Foursquare itself; the nearest budget guesthouses and apartments are around Six Cross Roads and the south coast at Oistins and Silver Sands, roughly BBD$80-150 a night.
- Mid-range: The south-coast strip at Worthing, Dover and St. Lawrence Gap (about 20-30 minutes away) offers many mid-range hotels and apartment hotels in the BBD$200-400 range.
- Upscale / heritage: The Crane Resort, on the Saint Philip cliffs about 15 minutes away, has historic and luxury suites from roughly BBD$500-900 a night — the closest upscale option.
What should you buy?
The distillery's shop sells its full range of rums, including bottlings hard to find abroad, plus branded merchandise — the best souvenir to take from Foursquare. For groceries and everyday goods, Six Cross Roads has shops and supermarkets, with larger malls on the south coast. Barbadian specialties worth seeking elsewhere include rum cake, hot-pepper sauce, mahogany craft, and Chalky Mount pottery. Shop prices are fixed; bargaining is reserved for roadside craft stalls, not stores.
