Sweeting's Cay

East Grand Bahama, Bahamas

Why visit Sweeting's Cay?

Sweeting's Cay is an offshore island settlement situated at the easternmost extremity of the Grand Bahama archipelago in the East Grand Bahama district. Separated from the Grand Bahama mainland by a narrow sea channel across from McLean's Town, the settlement was established in the late 18th century by Loyalist families including the Feasters, Grants, and Pinders. The population numbers roughly 400 residents, whose daily rhythm centers on commercial fishing, conch diving, and flats guiding.

The cay has no paved road network for motor vehicles, and residents move around on foot, by bicycle, or in golf carts along concrete pathways. Its position on the edge of the Little Bahama Bank provides immediate access to shallow tidal flats, mangrove creeks, and offshore coral reefs. Travelers visit primarily for world-class bonefishing, drift snorkeling over marine sinkholes, and the solitude of an isolated Out Island fishing community.

The climate is tropical marine, moderated by constant trade winds. Average winter temperatures hover around 24°C (75°F), while summer highs reach 32°C (90°F). Because there are no commercial bank branches or automated teller machines on the island, travelers should carry sufficient Bahamian or US cash to cover all expenses.
