Feldkirch
Vorarlberg, Austria
Why visit Feldkirch?
Feldkirch is a historic town in the westernmost Austrian state of Vorarlberg, positioned in the Alpine Rhine Valley directly at the border with Liechtenstein and Switzerland. With origins dating to the late 12th century under the Counts of Montfort, the town sits at the intersection of trade routes linking Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. The Ill River flows through the settlement before joining the Rhine 3 kilometres to the west.
Travelers visit Feldkirch primarily for its preserved medieval inner city, dominated by the 13th-century Schattenburg Castle, and as a base for exploring the surrounding Vorarlberg mountains. The town functions as the transport hub for the Rhine Valley and Ill Valley, providing easy rail and road access to alpine ski areas in the Montafon and Arlberg regions as well as cultural sites around Lake Constance.
Feldkirch experiences a humid continental climate influenced by its position in the Rhine Valley and proximity to the Alps. Summer temperatures from June to August average daytime highs of 22°C to 25°C, with occasional thunderstorms bringing heavy rain. Winter from December to February brings temperatures ranging from -3°C to 4°C, frequent cloud cover, and regular snowfall. Spring and autumn bring moderate temperatures between 10°C and 18°C. Annual rainfall totals around 1,200 mm, distributed throughout the year.
