Mieming
Tirol, Austria
Why visit Mieming?
Mieming is a tranquil municipality in the Oberland region of Tirol, set on the sun-drenched Mieming Plateau high above the Inn Valley. The village enjoys a sheltered microclimate — the plateau traps warmth, making it noticeably milder than the valley floor below — and offers sweeping views across the Inn River to the Tux Alps and the Zillertal mountains. Mieming comprises several small hamlets including Barwies, Untermieming, and Obermieming, each with working farms, traditional Gasthöfe, and a slow pace of life that appeals to hikers, paragliders, and anyone seeking quiet Alpine scenery.
The main square in Barwies serves as the local hub, with a small supermarket, pharmacy, and several restaurants. The plateau is criss-crossed with well-marked walking trails connecting outlying hamlets, and the area is a launch site for paragliding — thermals are reliable from spring through autumn. Winters are quieter, but cross-country skiing and winter hiking trails are maintained on the plateau.

By Plane
Innsbruck Airport (INN) is 55 km east of Mieming, about a 40-minute drive via the A12 motorway. Direct flights arrive from London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and Vienna. From the airport, take a FlixBus or regional bus to Telfs or Silz, then the local bus to Mieming. A taxi from Innsbruck to Mieming costs €70–90.
By Train
ÖBB regional trains on the Arlberg line connect to Stams or Silz stations, each about 15 minutes by local bus from Mieming. Railjet trains from Vienna, Salzburg, and Innsbruck stop at Telfs-Pfaffenhofen station (12 km), from which a postbus runs hourly to Mieming. The full journey from Innsbruck takes about 1 hour.
By Car / Road
From Innsbruck, take the A12 Inntal Autobahn westbound, exit at Mötz or Silz, then follow the B189 across the plateau. The drive takes 35–40 minutes. Parking is plentiful in the village centre. From Landeck (30 km west), the drive via the B171 and B189 takes about 30 minutes.
Mieming is small enough to explore on foot. Local postbuses run between the hamlets every 1–2 hours on weekdays; schedules are limited on weekends. A bicycle is ideal for covering the plateau — the terrain is gently rolling, and several farm roads and cycle paths connect the hamlets. Electric bikes can be rented at Intersport in Telfs or from select hotels in the area.
What are the things to do?
Pfarrkirche Mieming: A striking 18th-century Baroque parish church with an onion-domed spire and vivid ceiling frescoes depicting the life of Saint Martin. The interior features a gilded high altar and intricate stucco work. Barwies, open daily.
Kapelle Maria Schnee (Obermieming): A small pilgrimage chapel with a wooden shingled roof and panoramic views of the Inn Valley. The annual feast-day procession in August draws locals from across the plateau.
Aussichtsplattform Barwies: A wooden viewing platform overlooking the Inn River and the Zillertal Alps, ideal for sunset photography. Accessible via a 10-minute walk from the village square.
Mieminger Plateau nature trail: A 5 km educational loop with panels on local geology, flora, and farming traditions. Starts at the Barwies church and winds through meadows and woodland.
Paragliding: The Mieming Plateau is one of Tirol's premier tandem-paragliding sites. Several schools (Flugschule Mieming, Aeroclub Tirol) offer tandem flights from €120, with thermals strongest April–October.
Hiking: Dozens of marked trails cross the plateau. The easy 8 km Rundwanderweg circuit connects all three hamlets and takes about 2.5 hours. For a longer day, descend to the Inn Valley floor and return by bus.
Cross-country skiing: The plateau maintains 20 km of classic and skating tracks in winter, groomed December–March. Equipment rental at Sport Rupp in Telfs.
Winter hiking: Five cleared routes (3–8 km) are lit until 21:00 in the high season. Free access from any hamlet.
Farm visits: Several working farms (Bauernhof Reindl, Hof Salvenberg) welcome visitors for fresh milk, cheese tasting, and a look at Alpine dairy life. Call ahead for hours.
