Walpole

Western Australia, Australia

Why visit Walpole?

Walpole sits within the Walpole Wilderness, a vast protected expanse of old-growth forest, granite peaks, rivers and tranquil inlets where the Walpole and Nornalup Inlets open to the Southern Ocean. The town is tiny — a few hundred residents — and exists largely to serve visitors drawn to the surrounding wilderness. Its signature attraction, the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk, carries you on a steel walkway high into the canopy of the rare red tingle trees, which grow nowhere else on Earth and can reach enormous girths.

The climate here is cool and wet by Western Australian standards — the south coast is greener and milder than most of the state, with mild summers and cool, rainy winters. The forests are lush and the rivers run year-round. Spring brings wildflowers; the area is comfortable to visit in any season, though winter is cool and damp. Walpole is a place to slow down among big trees and quiet water.

How do you get there?

By Car / Road

Walpole lies on the South Coast Highway, about 420 km (roughly 4.5–5 hours) south of Perth and around 1.5 hours west of Albany. It's a standard stop on the scenic south-coast drive linking Denmark, Walpole and the karri country around Pemberton and Manjimup. Coach services connect the south coast with Perth and Albany.

A car is essential to reach the national parks, inlets and the Valley of the Giants, which lie outside the small town. The town centre itself is walkable, and boat cruises explore the inlets from the waterfront.

What are the things to do?

  • Conspicuous Cliff and beaches — Wild Southern Ocean beaches and lookouts within the national park, with seasonal whale watching.

  • Mount Frankland — A granite peak with a summit walk and views over the wilderness.

  • Circular Pool and the Frankland River — Tranquil forest-and-river scenery.

  • Walk the Tree Top Walk and the Ancient Empire boardwalk among the giant tingles.

  • Cruise or kayak the Walpole and Nornalup Inlets.
