Newman is a modern mining town in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, approximately 1,200 km north of Perth. It was established in the 1960s to service the Mount Whaleback iron ore mine, which is one of the largest open-cut iron ore mines in the world. The town has a population of around 5,000 and is named after the surveyor M.A. Newman. The climate is hot semi-arid, with blazing summers and mild winters.

By Plane
Newman Airport (ZNE) has direct flights from Perth operated by Qantas and Virgin Australia. The airport is about 5 km from the town centre. Taxis and ride-sharing are available.
By Train
There is no passenger rail service to Newman. The town is connected by railway for iron ore freight only.
By Car / Road
Newman is on the Great Northern Highway, about 12 hours drive from Perth. The road is sealed from all directions. From Port Hedland, it is about 4.5 hours south via the Great Northern Highway.
A car is essential in Newman. The town is spread out along the highway. Taxis and ride-sharing are very limited. Town buses operate during weekdays for essential services.
