Thredbo

New South Wales, Australia

Why visit Thredbo?

Thredbo lies just on the snowline, tucked into a steep valley beneath the Main Range. Unlike Australia's other major snowfields, it has a true village at its heart, with a variety of accommodation, ski lodges, restaurants and even a heated swimming pool, all just a short walk or shuttle-bus ride from the lifts. That village atmosphere is its defining quality, and it keeps the place alive through the warmer months when many alpine resorts empty out.

In winter, Thredbo offers some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the country, with the longest runs in Australia descending from the top of the lift system. In summer, the chairlift carries walkers up toward the start of the track to Mount Kosciuszko — the highest point on the Australian mainland — while the mountain biking trails draw riders from across the country. By comparison, nearby Perisher Valley has more lifts and skiable terrain in winter but little village atmosphere and is essentially deserted (a large car park) in summer; Thredbo is the more rounded year-round destination.

The climate is genuinely alpine: cold, snowy winters (the ski season runs roughly June to early October) and mild, fresh summers. Winter is peak season, with the village at its liveliest and priciest; summer is quieter but increasingly popular for walking and riding.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport with scheduled services is Cooma–Snowy Mountains Airport (OOM IATA), from which you can hire a car or take a coach to Thredbo.

By Car / Road

Thredbo is on the Alpine Way, about 1 hour from Cooma and roughly 2.5 hours from Canberra; it is around 6 hours' drive from Sydney. In winter, snow chains may be required on the approach, and the road can be affected by snow and ice. A national park entry fee applies to vehicles. Coach services run to the Snowy Mountains resorts in the ski season.

The village is compact and walkable, and a free or low-cost shuttle bus links accommodation with the ski lifts in winter. Once you are in Thredbo you generally don't need a car to get around the village itself; the chairlifts carry you up the mountain for skiing in winter and walking in summer. Within Kosciuszko National Park, the Alpine Way and the lift system are the main ways to reach the high country.

What are the things to do?

  • Mount Kosciuszko — Australia's highest mainland peak (2,228 m), reached via the Kosciuszko Express chairlift and the walking track from the top station in the warmer months.

  • Kosciuszko National Park high country — Alpine meadows, glacial lakes and dramatic mountain scenery surround the village.

  • The village itself — A rare slice of alpine architecture and atmosphere in Australia.

  • Skiing and snowboarding (winter) — Australia's longest runs and a full alpine resort with lifts, lessons and après-ski.

  • Bushwalking (summer) — The chairlift-assisted walk to the summit of Mount Kosciuszko is a regional highlight, along with many other alpine tracks.

  • Mountain biking (summer) — Thredbo has a well-regarded network of downhill and cross-country trails served by the chairlift.

  • Snowplay and tobogganing — Family snow activities in season, sometimes lingering well into early summer.

  • Relaxation — The village's heated pool, spa and dining round out a stay.
