Hunter Valley
New South Wales, Australia
Why visit Hunter Valley?
The Hunter Valley forms one part of the wider Hunter region, which also takes in Greater Newcastle and the rural Upper Hunter. As a travel destination, "the Hunter Valley" generally means the cluster of vineyards, cellar doors and resorts around Pokolbin and Cessnock, with Cessnock acting as the regional service centre. Vines were first planted here in the 1820s, making it one of the oldest wine regions in the country, and it remains best known for Semillon and Shiraz.
The landscape is gently rolling farmland and vineyard, framed by the Brokenback Range, dotted with cellar doors, golf resorts, restaurants and guesthouses. Most visitors come for a weekend of wine tasting, with food, golf, spas, hot-air ballooning and live concerts at the larger wineries rounding out the appeal. Maitland, just to the northeast, makes a useful base when accommodation in Cessnock and Pokolbin is booked out.
The climate is warm and the region can be hot and humid in midsummer; spring and autumn are the most pleasant times to visit, while vintage (harvest) falls in late summer. Weekends, long weekends and concert dates are the busiest and priciest; midweek is quieter and often better value.

By Plane
The nearest major airports are Newcastle Airport (NTL IATA) at Williamtown, around an hour's drive northeast, and Sydney Airport (SYD IATA), around two hours south. Most international visitors fly into Sydney and drive or take a tour up to the wine country. Car hire is the most practical way to reach and explore the valley.
By Train
NSW TrainLink Hunter Line trains run from Newcastle and Sydney to Maitland and on to Branxton and Singleton, on the northern edge of the wine district, but no train serves the Pokolbin cellar-door area directly — you will need a car, taxi or tour from the station. Many visitors instead join an organised wine tour that includes transport from Sydney or Newcastle.
By Car / Road
From Sydney, the Hunter Valley is around 160 km (about 2 hours) north via the M1 Pacific Motorway and the Hunter Expressway, exiting toward Cessnock and Pokolbin. From Newcastle it is around 60 km (about 1 hour). The roads are good, but a designated driver or a guided tour is strongly advised given the nature of a tasting day.
There is no useful public transport between the wineries, which are spread across country roads around Pokolbin. The options are to drive (with a sober driver), hire a private car or limousine, or join a hop-on-style wine tour or shuttle. Some visitors explore by bicycle or on guided cycling tours, and a few cellar doors are within walking distance of each other in the Pokolbin cluster. Watch for kangaroos on rural roads at dawn and dusk.
What are the things to do?
Cellar doors of Pokolbin — The heart of the region: dozens of wineries large and small offer tastings, from historic family estates to boutique producers. Semillon and Shiraz are the signature styles.
Hunter Valley Gardens — Extensive themed display gardens with a village of shops and cafés, popular with families and lit up for Christmas.
Brokenback Range — The forested ridge that frames the valley, offering scenic backdrops, lookouts and bushwalks.
Wine tasting — The defining activity; book ahead at the bigger names and seek out small producers for a quieter experience.
Food and produce — The valley has a strong dining scene, with cheese, chocolate, olives and other gourmet producers alongside hatted restaurants.
Hot-air ballooning — Dawn flights over the vineyards are a regional signature.
Golf and spas — Several resorts offer championship golf courses and day spas.
Live concerts — Larger wineries host major outdoor concerts, especially in summer and autumn.
