San Juan is a province in western Argentina's Cuyo region, bordering Chile along the Andes mountain range. It records more than 300 sunny days annually, resulting in an arid desert landscape dominated by high mountain peaks, dry gravel plains, and irrigated valleys fed by snowmelt rivers. The provincial capital, also named San Juan, was completely rebuilt following a magnitude 7.0 earthquake in 1944. As a result, the city features wide avenues, low-rise earthquake-resistant concrete structures, and tree-lined streets irrigated by open water channels called acequias.
Agriculture and viticulture drive the local economy alongside mining and solar energy. San Juan is Argentina's second-largest wine producer after Mendoza, specializing in Syrah, Bonarda, and Malbec grown in high-altitude sub-valleys like Zonda, Ullum, and Pedernal. Outside the central valley, the province contains dramatic geological formations, including Ischigualasto Provincial Park (Valle de la Luna), where Triassic dinosaur fossils lie exposed in desert sandstone.
Travelers visit San Juan for outdoor activities, high-altitude mountain scenery, and wine tasting without the large tourist crowds found in neighboring Mendoza. The western mountain valleys of Barreal and Calingasta serve as bases for trekking near Cerro Mercedario (6,770 m) and land-sailing across dry lakebeds, while clear atmospheric conditions make the region a key site for astronomical observatories.
When is the best time to visit?
Autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November) offer the most comfortable conditions. Autumn daytime temperatures range from 20°C to 27°C with cool nights (8°C–14°C), coinciding with the grape harvest. Spring brings similar daytime temperatures (22°C to 28°C) and clear skies.
Summer (December to February) is hot, with lowland temperatures frequently exceeding 38°C. Rain is rare but falls mostly in summer as brief afternoon thunderstorms. Winter (June to August) is dry, with mild days (12°C to 18°C) and cold nights that frequently drop below freezing (0°C to -4°C) in high mountain valleys like Barreal. The Zonda wind—a hot, dry wind blowing off the Andes—occurs most frequently between August and November, causing sudden temperature spikes and dusty conditions.
