Why visit San Martin?

Ciudad de General San Martín (commonly called San Martín) is an agricultural city in eastern Mendoza Province, located 45 km east of Mendoza City. Operating as the commercial center of Mendoza's eastern agricultural region (Zona Este), the city's economy focuses on grape cultivation, fruit processing, and olive oil production. It is recognized as Argentina's primary production zone for Bonarda wine grapes.

The city was founded in 1816 by General José de San Martín, who purchased land here—the "Los Barriales" estate—with plans to settle as a farmer following his military campaigns for South American independence. His former estate grounds and reconstructed homestead remain a central landmark.

San Martín has a semi-arid continental climate. Summers (December to February) are hot, with daily high temperatures averaging 30–33°C (86–91°F) and occasional peaks above 35°C (95°F), accompanied by brief late-afternoon thunderstorms. Winters (June to August) bring dry, clear weather with daytime highs around 14–17°C (57–63°F) and night temperatures dropping to 2–5°C (36–41°F). Annual precipitation is low at roughly 200 mm.
