Huambo

Huambo is a central Angolan province of about 34,270 km², with its capital city (also Huambo) sitting on a high plateau at roughly 1,720 m elevation, giving it a mild, spring-like climate year-round despite the tropical latitude — wet from October to April, dry from May to September. Founded in 1912 and renamed Nova Lisboa ("New Lisbon") under Portuguese rule in 1928, the city reverted to its original name after independence in 1975. Huambo grew into a major economic hub as the key inland junction of the Benguela Railway, linking the Atlantic port of Lobito to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and it hosted one of Africa's largest railway workshops by the 1920s along with significant agricultural processing. The Angolan Civil War (1975–2002) — including the brutal "55-Day War" fought in and around the city — badly damaged Huambo's infrastructure, and the city and province have been rebuilding since.

May to October is the dry season and the best time for travel. November to April is the rainy season.

Roads connect the main towns. Buses and shared taxis operate between major centres. A 4x4 is recommended for rural areas.
