Cuando Cubango

Cuando Cubango occupies the extreme southeast of Angola, bordered by Moxico to the north, Huíla and Cunene to the west, Namibia to the south, and Zambia to the east. Its name comes from the Cuando and Cubango rivers, which run through the eastern and western edges of the region — part of the water system that feeds Namibia's Okavango Delta further south. The provincial capital was Menongue (formerly Serpa Pinto). The Cuito River, a tributary of the Cubango, runs past Cuito Cuanavale, the site of one of the largest and most decisive battles of the Angolan Civil War (1987–88), fought between Cuban/Angolan and South African/UNITA-backed forces. This is a sparsely populated, largely undeveloped part of Angola with extensive miombo woodland and riverine habitat. (In a 2024 administrative reorganisation, the former province was split into separate Cuando and Cubango provinces, but this guide follows the earlier undivided territory.)

May to October is the dry season and the best time for travel. November to April is the rainy season.

Roads connect the main towns. Buses and shared taxis operate between major centres. A 4x4 is recommended for rural areas.

Angolan culture blends African traditions with Portuguese colonial influences. Music includes semba, kizomba, and kuduro.
