Why visit?

Bié is a province on the Bié Plateau in central Angola, at an altitude around 1,850 m. Its capital, Kuito, was known as Silva Porto before independence in 1975 and remains the chief trade and market centre for the surrounding plateau, processing rice, coffee, meat, and beeswax. The province borders Malanje, Lunda Sul, Moxico, Cuando Cubango, Huíla, Huambo, and Cuanza Sul. The cool, rainy highland climate supports maize, sugarcane, rice, coffee, and peanut farming, and the Kwanza River — Angola's longest — rises here, giving Bié substantial hydroelectric potential. Kuito was heavily damaged during the Angolan Civil War (notably the prolonged 1993–94 siege) and has been steadily rebuilt since.

When is the best time to visit?
