Reguiba

El Oued, Algeria

About Reguiba

Reguiba is an oasis town in El Oued Province, in the Souf region of the northern Sahara in southeastern Algeria. It sits within the date-growing heartland of the Souf, north of the provincial capital, El Oued, surrounded by the palm groves and funnel-shaped ghout pits that characterise oasis farming in this part of the desert. Agriculture, and dates in particular, are the mainstay of local life.

Like the other towns of the Souf, Reguiba reflects the region's traditional domed architecture, with rounded gypsum cupolas roofing older buildings against the heat. It is a quiet agricultural community offering an authentic look at Saharan oasis life, easily reached from El Oued.

The climate is harsh desert: very hot, dry summers from May to September with daytime temperatures often above 40°C, and mild days with cold nights in winter. The most comfortable months for a visit are October to April.
