Cheraga
Alger, Algeria
Why visit Cheraga?
Chéraga is a commercial and residential commune in the western suburbs of Algiers, situated in the Sahel hills about 18 km west of the capital's center. Established as an agricultural colony in 1842 during the French colonial era, Chéraga expanded significantly in the late 20th and early 21st centuries into a major economic and residential hub within Alger Province. Today, it accommodates corporate offices, shopping centers, automotive dealerships, and quiet villa quarters.
Travelers use Chéraga as a strategic base to stay outside the congested center of Algiers while maintaining direct road links to the capital and the Mediterranean coast. Its location allows quick access to the resort peninsula of Sidi Fredj, the beaches of Zéralda, and the central administrative districts of Algiers. The town center features active commercial avenues, bakeries, and casual open-air cafés.
The climate is Mediterranean, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. Summer daytime highs between June and August average 29°C to 34°C with high coastal humidity. Winter temperatures from December through February range from 8°C to 16°C with regular rainfall. Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) offer moderate temperatures and clear skies.

By Air
Houari Boumediene Airport (IATA: ALG) is the main international entry point, located 32 km east of Chéraga. The airport connects Algiers to major cities across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa via Air Algérie, Air France, Transavia, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Lufthansa (flight time from Paris is 2 hours 15 minutes; from London, 2 hours 45 minutes). A taxi or ride-hailing vehicle (Yassir, Heetch) via the Rocade Sud highway takes 35 to 50 minutes and costs 1,800–2,500 DZD ($13–$19 USD).
By Train
No train service operates directly into Chéraga. The nearest mainline railway terminal is Agha Station (Gare d'Agha) in central Algiers, 15 km east, operated by the national rail carrier SNTF. For suburban rail, Zéralda Station lies 13 km west and connects to Birtouta and central Algiers on the SNTF commuter network every 30 to 60 minutes for 40–70 DZD ($0.30–$0.55 USD). From either station, take an ETUSA bus, a collective taxi, or a private cab to reach Chéraga.
By Car
Chéraga connects directly to the Algiers expressway system. From central Algiers, take the RN41 or the Rocade Sud (about 18 km, 25 to 45 minutes depending on traffic). From the western coastal resorts, the RN11 links to the RN41 at Aïn Benian, reaching Chéraga in 10 minutes (5 km). From Tipaza to the west, follow the A100 and RN11 east for 55 km (50 minutes).
By Bus
The public bus authority ETUSA operates four lines serving Chéraga, linking the commune with central Algiers hubs and neighbouring communes such as Ben Aknoun and Dély Ibrahim. Buses run frequently through the daytime, taking 35 to 50 minutes, with tickets priced at 20–50 DZD ($0.15–$0.38 USD). Privately owned white minibuses run the same corridors on a rolling schedule for 30–50 DZD ($0.23–$0.38 USD).
- Ride-Hailing Apps: Mobile apps Yassir and Heetch provide upfront fares and driver tracking. A ride within Chéraga costs 250–500 DZD ($1.90–$3.80 USD), while rides to central Algiers cost 700–1,200 DZD ($5.30–$9.00 USD).
- Taxis: Metered yellow taxis and unmarked street cabs operate across main intersections. If the meter is not turned on, negotiate the price beforehand; local trips range from 200–400 DZD ($1.50–$3.00 USD). Shared collective taxis (taxis collectifs) run set routes along the main roads towards Dély Ibrahim for 50–100 DZD ($0.38–$0.76 USD) per seat.
- Buses: ETUSA city buses and private minibuses connect Chéraga with neighboring communes like Dély Ibrahim, Staouéli, and Aïn Benian for 20–40 DZD ($0.15–$0.30 USD), paid in cash to the conductor on board.
