About Pukë

Pukë is a small mountain town of around 3,000 in Shkodër County, north-eastern Albania, set on a high plateau (around 850 m) on the SH5 road between Shkodër and Kukës. Historically a market town of the surrounding Catholic and Muslim mountain villages, it gained brief prominence under communism as a chrome and copper mining centre; today the mines are mostly closed and the town is quiet, though its high altitude makes it a popular summer escape from the Shkodër heat. In winter, Pukë Ski Resort on the slopes above the town operates a small lift when snow cover allows — one of only a couple of functioning ski destinations in Albania.

For travellers, Pukë is mostly a stop on the long SH5 drive between Shkodër and Kukës (since the A1 motorway runs further east via the Kalimash tunnel, this older road is now much quieter and very scenic). The mountain setting, the surrounding Pulati / Mirditë highlands, and the small ski lift give it niche appeal.

Climate: continental, high-altitude — pleasantly cool summers (~20–25°C), cold snowy winters. Best months for hiking June–September; January–February for the ski lift.
